'India not Bharat'
The
petition demanding to change the name of the country to Bharat or Hindustan was
heard in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday (March 12, 2025), the Delhi High
Court has settled the matter. The court has asked the petitioner to file an
application with the Ministry of Home Affairs. Along with this, the court also
asked the Home Ministry to take a decision on the representation as soon as
possible.
At
the same time, the lawyer of the central government said that the petitioner
has not made the Home Ministry a party, whereas in such a case the decision has
to be taken by the Home Ministry. In the petition, there was a demand to direct
the government to amend the Constitution and replace the word 'Bharat' or
'Hindustan' with the word India. The last hearing in this case was held on
February 17, 2025. During that time, Justice Sachin Dutta had extended the time
given to the Central Government to file the reply.
Delhi's Namah had demanded amendment in Article 1 of the Constitution
Petitioner Namah, a resident
of Delhi, while demanding amendment in Article 1 of the Constitution, had said
that the line 'India which is Bharat' in the Constitution should be changed to
'Bharat or Hindustan Union of States'. Namah has also gone to the Supreme Court
before this. He said that the country should be given its original and
authentic name Bharat. In the year 2020 also, the Supreme Court had directed
the concerned ministry to take cognizance of the matter. However, no action of
any kind was taken on this till now.
RSS had also raised questions
On Monday (March 10, 2025), RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale also raised questions regarding changing the name of the country. He said that the country should be called Bharat and not India. He had said that the Constitution of India should be changed to Constitution of Bharat, Reserve Bank of India should be changed to Reserve Bank of Bharat. Raising the question, he said, if the name of the country is Bharat, then just say Bharat, why call it another name, India?
